Flight Sim Panels Explained: Switch, Autopilot and Control Panels
Flight sim panels are USB boxes of physical switches, buttons, dials and levers that take cockpit functions off the keyboard and mouse. They fall into four practical types: generic control panels you map yourself, replica panels copied from one aircraft, button frames that surround an on-screen display, and autopilot panels built into a throttle quadrant. Which one to buy first depends on what you fly. A general aviation or airliner pilot gets the most from an autopilot panel and gear lever. A combat pilot gets more from a replica panel. This guide explains the types and what each maker actually states about its hardware.
Quick Answer
- Flying airliners or general aviation: start with a throttle quadrant that includes an autopilot panel, annunciator lights and a gear lever.
- Flying one combat aircraft: a replica panel for that aircraft, plus MFD button frames.
- Flying many aircraft: a generic control panel with toggles, encoders and labelled buttons you assign per aircraft.
- Before buying: check the platform. Most panels here are PC devices.
The Types of Flight Sim Panel
"Flight sim switch panel", "button box" and "control panel" are used loosely, and they overlap. The useful distinction is how much the panel decides for you.
| Type | Example | Inputs stated by the maker | Platform (maker) | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Generic control panel | VIRPIL Control Panel #1 | 12 RGB buttons, 6 momentary toggles, 2 latched toggles, 2 flip-cover toggles, 3 encoder dials, 2 axis dials | Not stated on its page | Pilots who switch aircraft often |
| Generic panel with gear lever | VIRPIL Control Panel #2 | 10 RGB buttons, 10 toggles, 3 encoder dials, multi-position landing gear lever | Windows PC | Anyone who wants a physical gear lever |
| Generic panel with axis levers | VIRPIL Control Panel #3 | 4 axis levers, 10 RGB switches, 3 push buttons, 10 toggles, 2 encoder dials, 5-way mode dial | PC | Helicopter and multi-engine setups needing extra axes |
| Aircraft replica panel | Thrustmaster Viper Panel | 43 action buttons (11 virtual), a trim wheel, rotary selectors, landing gear lever with indicator lights | PC | Combat pilots flying that aircraft |
| MFD button frames | Thrustmaster MFD Cougar Pack | Two frames, each with 20 buttons and 4 switches | PC | Aircraft with multi-function displays |
| Autopilot panel in a throttle quadrant | Honeycomb Bravo Throttle Quadrant | Autopilot and annunciator panel with 7 assignable switches and 14 indicator lights, gear lever with LEDs, 6 levers | PC, Mac; Xbox only with Honeycomb's Alpha XPC and Xbox hub | General aviation and airliner flying |
Dedicated radio and autopilot panels with their own numeric displays are a fifth type. They show frequencies and autopilot values on the panel itself, which depends on the simulator sending them live data, so check the maker's stated support for your simulator version before buying one.
Generic Control Panels and Button Boxes
A generic panel has no fixed function. VIRPIL states that its Control Panel #3 is recognised as a standard USB input device without additional drivers, which is why it works with any simulator that accepts USB controllers. You assign each switch in the simulator's control settings, the same way you would a joystick button. The X-Plane 12 manual describes that process for any input device: with the hardware plugged in, you configure how the simulator responds to each axis and button.
What separates the VIRPIL panels is the input mix. Toggle switches suit on/off systems such as lights and pumps. Encoder dials suit values you turn, such as heading and altitude. Panel #2 adds a landing gear lever with a lift-to-move mechanism and a swappable plate for two- or three-position operation. The panels can run as separate USB devices or be joined to appear as a single device, and they mount on the included desktop legs or VIRPIL's desk mounts.
Replica Panels and MFD Frames
A replica panel trades flexibility for realism. Thrustmaster's Viper Panel is based on the cockpit controls of the Viper, is officially licensed by the U.S. Air Force, and is described as plug and play in DCS World, where the game recognises it automatically. It is backlit, with adjustable indicator lights on the landing gear controls.
The MFD Cougar Pack is a pair of button frames that Thrustmaster's store describes as replicas of the U.S. Air Force F-16 MFD. Thrustmaster's pages describe buttons, switches and backlighting, not a built-in screen. Each frame has windows for the included printed card layouts, and its 20 buttons and 4 switches send the inputs. Thrustmaster lists them as compatible with flight simulation games that support multiple USB devices. For how these fit into a combat setup, see our DCS hardware guide.
The Autopilot Panel You May Already Be Buying
For civil flying, the most used panel functions are autopilot modes, landing gear and flaps. The Honeycomb Bravo puts those into a throttle quadrant, so one purchase covers throttle levers and a panel. Honeycomb states that its autopilot panel covers common functions for commercial and general aviation aircraft, and that the annunciator panel has 14 indicator lights. Honeycomb lists separate landing gear LED driver downloads for MSFS 2024 and MSFS 2020, so install the one for your simulator.
The Bravo Throttle Quadrant Lite is a different product, not a cheaper version of the same thing. Honeycomb's page for it lists four levers, a trim wheel, a parking brake and a gear lever with an LED indicator, for PC and Mac, and does not list an autopilot or annunciator panel. If glass-cockpit avionics are your goal, our G1000 hardware guide covers that separately.
Simulator Support: What Is Actually Stated
- Microsoft Flight Simulator: Microsoft's peripherals list is a set of recommendations, not a whitelist. It names the Thrustmaster Viper Panel for PC, and says devices not on the list are still expected to work with more key mapping by the user.
- X-Plane 12: the manual says X-Plane interfaces with USB devices and recommends plugging flight controls directly into the computer, not a hub.
- DCS World: Thrustmaster states plug-and-play recognition for the Viper Panel.
Panels add USB devices quickly, so plan ports and mounting before you buy. Our home cockpit build guide covers layout. You can browse the full range in the avionics panels collection.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a flight sim switch panel and a button box?
In practice, very little. Both are USB devices with physical controls you map in the simulator. "Switch panel" usually implies aviation-style toggles and a gear lever. "Button box" is the general term for any box of assignable buttons and dials.
Which flight sim panel should I buy first?
Buy for the controls you reach for most. For airliners and general aviation that is autopilot, gear and flaps, which a throttle quadrant with an autopilot panel covers. For combat aircraft, a replica panel and MFD frames come first.
Do flight sim panels work with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024?
Check each maker. Honeycomb labels the Bravo as compatible and provides an MSFS 2024 LED driver. Microsoft's general peripherals list names the Thrustmaster Viper Panel, and says unlisted devices are expected to work with manual mapping. VIRPIL names no specific simulator and describes its panels as standard USB input devices.
Do flight sim panels work on Xbox?
Mostly no. The VIRPIL and Thrustmaster panels here are listed for PC. Honeycomb lists the Bravo for Xbox only in addition to its Alpha XPC yoke and Xbox hub.
Match the Panel to the Aircraft
List the five controls you use most in flight, then choose the panel type that gives them a physical switch.
