Outdoor Golf Simulator: What Works in a Backyard and What Stays Indoors

An outdoor golf simulator is usually a net, a hitting mat, a portable launch monitor and a phone, tablet or laptop. It is not an impact screen and projector moved into the yard. Foresight Sports describes outdoor setups in exactly those terms and states that the full projector and screen setup is indoor only. This guide covers what can go outside, what each launch monitor maker says about outdoor use, and what has to come back in when you finish.

Quick Answer

  • What works outside: a net rated for full shots, a hitting mat, and a launch monitor whose maker approves outdoor use.
  • What stays inside: impact screens and projectors. Carl's Place recommends its impact screens for indoor use only.
  • Check the exact model. Uneekor's EYE MINI manual allows indoor and outdoor use. The EYE MINI LITE manual says indoor use only.
  • Plan for wind and storage. The Net Return recommends four sandbags on the frame outdoors, and several launch monitor makers tell you not to leave the unit outside.

What a Backyard Golf Simulator Actually Is

A backyard golf simulator replaces the screen with real ball flight into a net, or into open space if you have it. The launch monitor reads the shot and the simulator software shows the result on a device you bring outside. That makes the launch monitor the main decision, and portable units are the ones built to move between a room and a yard. You can browse them in the portable launch monitors collection.

Which Launch Monitors Can Be Used Outdoors

Each maker words this differently, so read the statement for the model you are buying. The table quotes or paraphrases the maker's own documentation, checked in October 2026.

Launch monitor What the maker says about outdoor use Maker's caveat
Garmin Approach R10 Place it on the ground 6 to 8 ft behind the tee. Water rating IEC 60529 IPX7. Garmin defines IPX7 as incidental exposure to water, and says to store the device out of direct sunlight.
Rapsodo MLM2PRO "Full functionality indoors and outdoors." Sits 6.5 to 8.5 ft behind the ball. A Titleist or Callaway RPT ball is required to show spin numbers.
FlightScope Mevo+ Can be used indoors and outdoors. FlightScope says radar does not require direct sunlight. Outdoor full-swing use assumes unrestricted ball flight. Hitting into a net works only if the minimum space requirements are met.
Uneekor EYE MINI The manual states the device can be used indoors and outdoors. Not designed for use in rain, or where water or high humidity may occur.
Uneekor EYE MINI LITE The manual states indoor use only. Not an outdoor unit.
SkyTrak Portable, for indoor and outdoor use on a hitting mat. Avoid direct sunlight on the lens, hit from a covered area if you can, and do not leave it outdoors when not in use.

Two points follow from the table. First, no maker we checked publishes a blanket rule that camera units fail in sunlight or that radar units always need a long ball flight. Each statement belongs to one product. Second, expect your numbers to differ between the yard and the garage. Foresight Sports says seeing different numbers indoors and outdoors is normal and is almost always the environment, not the launch monitor. If a reading looks wrong, our guide to camera and radar spin misreads explains the usual causes.

The Net: Ball Speed, Wind and Leaving It Out

The net is the safety equipment, so buy one rated for full shots. The Net Return states that its Pro Series net handles ball speeds up to 225 MPH, indoors or outdoors.

  • Wind: The Net Return says wind can catch the net and topple it outdoors, and recommends four sandbags on the base of the frame.
  • Weather: the maker describes the netting as UV-treated and weather-resistant, and built tough enough to leave outside.
  • Permanent outdoor use: the same maker highly recommends its outdoor cover if the net stays out permanently.

Garmin's 8 ft minimum from tee to net is stated for indoor play. It gives no separate outdoor figure, so treat the indoor distance as the minimum outside as well. If you are still choosing between a net and a screen, see impact screen vs net return, and browse golf practice nets.

Why Screens and Projectors Stay Indoors

Daylight and moisture are the two problems. BenQ explains that a projector cannot produce black, so ambient light on the screen makes the image look grey and washed out, and that the best approach is to minimise light on the screen, especially sunlight. Carl's Place advises using an impact screen only in a clean, dry environment. For a projected image, plan an indoor bay or a covered structure you can darken. Garages are the usual answer, and our garage golf simulator guide covers them.

Outdoor Setup Checklist

  • Confirm in the manual that your exact launch monitor model is approved for outdoor use.
  • Measure the distance the maker requires behind the ball, and from ball to net.
  • Check which ball the unit needs for measured spin.
  • Anchor the net frame before the first shot on a windy day.
  • Keep the launch monitor dry and bring it inside afterwards.
  • Decide where the net is stored or covered between sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use a golf simulator outside?

Yes, in the net-and-launch-monitor form. A launch monitor approved for outdoor use, a net and a mat work outside. Projectors and impact screens are indoor equipment according to Foresight Sports and Carl's Place.

Do launch monitors work in direct sunlight?

It depends on the model. SkyTrak says direct sunlight on the lens may affect accuracy. FlightScope says radar does not require direct sunlight for accurate measurement. Check the documentation for your unit.

Can I leave my outdoor golf simulator set up all year?

The net may stay out if the maker allows it. The Net Return says its net can be left outside and recommends a cover for permanent outdoor use. Launch monitors are different: SkyTrak says not to leave its system outdoors when not in use, and Garmin warns against storing the R10 in extreme temperatures.

How much space does a backyard golf simulator need?

Add the maker's distance behind the ball to its ball-to-net distance. Rapsodo, for example, states a little more than 14 total feet for the MLM2PRO indoors: 8 ft from ball to net plus 6.5 to 8.5 ft behind the ball. Add room to swing and a clear area behind and beside the net.

Plan Your Outdoor Setup

Start with the launch monitor, because its documentation sets the distances and the conditions. Then choose the net and decide where everything is stored.
