Choose your flight simulator with a clearer plan

Explore FAA device categories, build a school planning checklist, and test your capacity and budget—all in one practical guide.

FAA credit depends on the exact device, current authorization, applicable rules and school program. This page does not establish approval for any product.

01 / Start with the outcome

What should your simulator help you do?

Choose your goal to see the questions worth answering before you compare equipment.

Your school’s starting point

Select the closest fit. This tool organizes your purchasing brief; it does not determine training-credit eligibility.

YOUR PLANNING PATH

Start with the exercise, then the equipment

Define the aircraft, avionics workflow and student tasks you want to practice. If FAA credit becomes a requirement, verify the complete device and its current authorization before buying.

  • Write down the learning objectives.
  • Identify the required controls, displays and instructor access.
  • Keep approval questions separate from component compatibility.

For Part 61 training, identify the specific rule and its conditions for the intended use.

02 / Understand the options

Explore the device categories

Select a category to see its role, the evidence to request and the question to ask next.

01

Build familiarity. Do not assume FAA credit.

Practice setup

A computer, cockpit and controls can support school-designed exercises. Their appearance or technical sophistication does not establish approval for the assembled system.

What to verify
Aircraft and avionics goals; controls and display compatibility; instructor visibility and software permissions.

Ask the supplier
“Is this a practice setup, or a complete device with current FAA documentation?”

Approval belongs to the documented device configuration. Adding a cockpit, motion system, software package or headset does not by itself create an approved training device. Your chief instructor should verify intended use before credit is advertised or logged.

04 / Plan the numbers

School Capacity & Revenue Planner

Enter your own assumptions to receive an illustrative planning estimate. Defaults are examples, not market rates or equipment quotes. Change any field and the results will update automatically.

Your assumptions

Use realistic off-peak capacity rather than your facility's total operating hours.

Your estimate updates automatically. Include setup and reset time when estimating available hours. Use net device revenue consistently; account for instructor compensation and avoid counting instructor revenue twice.

Your planning estimate

These figures are based entirely on the assumptions entered.

Booked hours per month —
Monthly gross revenue —
Annual gross revenue —
Monthly contribution —
Estimated payback —
Annual contribution —
Contribution equals gross revenue minus the variable-cost percentage and additional fixed costs entered. It does not account for every possible expense, including taxes, debt service, depreciation, existing payroll, licensing, maintenance, insurance or unexpected build-out costs.

Frequently asked questions

Answers for flight schools and aviation programs.

Can every flight simulator provide FAA-creditable time?
No. Credit requires an eligible, authorized device and compliance with the applicable rule and training conditions. Treat a practice setup as non-creditable until verified.
What should a school request before purchasing an ATD?
Request the current signed Letter of Authorization and Qualification and Approval Guide for the exact model and configuration. Review permitted uses and limitations with the chief instructor.
Does a motion platform or professional cockpit make a setup FAA approved?
No. Individual features or components do not establish FAA approval for the complete device.
Can ProSimHQ quote equipment for a school?
Yes. Share your intended use, aircraft and avionics goals, available room, budget and credit requirements. We can discuss equipment scope and request manufacturer details. Approval status and any required services must be confirmed for the specific project.
Is the guide free to download?
Yes. The four-page PDF is available directly without a form. It covers device categories, training-credit questions, purchasing checks and a school worksheet.
Are calculator results a forecast or equipment quote?
No. They are illustrative estimates based on your inputs. They do not establish equipment pricing, FAA eligibility, student demand or operating profit.
